Here is the link to a PDF of Jib Fowles' article,
"Advertising's 15 Basic Appeals." Although the advertisements he uses as examples are pretty old, the appeals are still applicable to todays ads. Can you think of current ads that fit the appeals that Fowles lists? Do you think there are any appeals that he missed or that should be included in the list?
Of course, this article is quite old one, but I think those 15 basic appeals are still applicable to today's ads. Actually, most them are related to a person's emotion, like sex appeal, and affiliation. Therefore, although the article has been so long time, a person's emotion things couldn't change easily, and those are still effective factors to make people pay attention ads.

By the way, is stimulating some person's emotional parts the only way to make successful ads? I know some ads that are really successful by hilarious sentences or words, and they are usually lasted for a long time.

You can see one or more of the appeals in any commercial on today; they are still very much applicable, though I do think that a few are used much more often than the rest of them. I also agree with Minsu Kim, that humor is a big part of ads today, and some of the best, most effective, ads that I've seen have a lot of humor in them. So humor should definitely be one of the appeals.

This article opened my eyes on so many hidden messages ads are trying to inject in us. The appeal in dodge trucks always gets me. I like to relate to hard working and getting stuff done. They are very effective and sneaky sometimes
