"The ABCs of E-Reading"

Here is the link for "The ABCs of E-Reading" by Fowler and Baca.  How many of you own Kindles or read e-books on your iPod or tablet? How do you prefer to experience books, now that so many options are available?

  1. Even though I own a Kindle, I still prefer to read an actual book. I feel that Tablets, Kindles, and Nooks are too distracting with the different apps and internet.

  2. I love the E-book talk. E-books are amazing for bringing reading to a new height. Books are available right there at the tip of your fingers. The only problem with them is they don't come with the old paper book scents!

I slightly prefer printed books if they are available and accessible. What do you think is the reason behind sticking with old fashioned printed books?

  3. Actually, I don't have many experiences of E-reading. I just read some articles or some short documents on the Internet. Of course, I have an inappropriate device for reading, smartphone which has a small screen. However, I still believe E-reading is not enough to replace reading printed books since it makes us distracted.

  4. If you were to have a real book and you travel somewhere you could maybe carry around 4 to 6 books at a time but with the E-reader you can hold hundreds of books at a time and whenever you want switch over and read some other great book at any given time. I think i would rather have the e-reader but I don't own one so I wouldn't fully understand.

  5. Well, that's true, but for me, I cannot focus on letters because there are a lot of distractions in the e-world.
By the way, if there's no network connection, like wi-fi or 3G, or there's no batter charger, I think the e-reader is quite useless, doesn't it?
What do you guys think about it? Is this point a big weak point or not?

    1. You don't need a network connection if you have already downloaded a book. Most of the time I will just download a bunch of books at home, and then read what I already have downloaded when I'm out somewhere else. Occasionally I've also downloaded some books while on campus or other places where there's free wifi. So most of the time it's not really a problem. Also, I haven't really had any problems with running out of battery life; I think it's happened only once or twice. The one time I can remember was sitting in a hospital waiting room till one or two in the morning. Even after it died, I was still grateful that I had had it for most of the time, because I didn't know ahead of time that I'd be spending the day in the ER because the girl I was with (with FOP) was going to have problems. I would have never thought to bring a book with me at the beginning of the day (there's not really time to read while shopping). So the battery dying didn't really bug me because the time that I was able to read before it died was better than nothing.

  6. I LOVE e-books. I have a small tablet that has both the Kindle and the Nook apps, and I use them constantly. For a good portion of my life I lived in Montana, in a tiny town with a sucky library, and the nearest Wal-mart or mall was over an hour away. I was lucky if I got to go to a bookstore once a month (but was usually a lot less than that). I love that now, after I finish a book at one in the morning, I can just stay in bed, click to a few different screens, and in less than five minutes be reading the next book in the series. I love the tons of free books you can get on Amazon. I love that you can get a lot of the e-books cheaper than the printed ones. I love that anywhere I go I have hundreds of books to choose from, instead of just one or two that would still weigh more than my tab. With that said, I still do love printed books as well; all my absolute favorites (like the Harry Potter ones, LOTR, Hunger Games, the Inheritance cycle, and Jane Austen books to name a few)are all hardcover copies that I'm quite obsessive about keeping in pristine condition.
